We are currently seeking a Manager in Tax Controversy Services to join us in our Kansas City office.

KPMG’s Tax Controversy Services (TCS) professionals help companies understand, anticipate, and strategically respond to the IRS, from the beginning of a controversy to its final resolution. Many of our TCS professionals have been directly involved in developing and litigating precedent-setting tax cases, assisting with the implementation of IRS compliance programs, establishing tax policy, and drafting new legislation.

Responsibilities:

• Represent clients before the IRS, at various levels of their IRS controversy from examination through appeals and into post appeals mediation and arbitration
• May represent clients in Fast Track proceedings, Early Referral proceedings, and Pre Filing Agreement submissions
• General involvement and management of IRS audits, which includes responding to Information Document Requests, Notices of Proposed Adjustments and other exam related matters
• Prepare Protests to Thirty Day Letters and represent clients at the Appeals level
• Assist in the delivery of Research Credit services
• Specific knowledge of transfer pricing issues and resolution processes is extremely helpful. (Competent Authority proceedings, APAs)
• Build awareness of opportunities to provide additional services to existing clients
• Recognize, research and recommend resolution of moderate to complex tax issues
• Assist clients with voluntary disclosures to the IRS to correct compliance erros involving missed filings, withholding tax errors and other similar issues
• Review penalty abatement request letters and assist in the execution of penalty abatement services in state and federal penalty cases
• Develop, motivate and train staff level team members

Qualifications:

• Five years of tax experience performing tax research, representing clients in federal controversies and providing technical advice on tax issues.. (if a government attorney, experience in representing the government position in federal tax matters)
• Bachelor's degree, J.D., LL.M. in Taxation, and/or Master's in Taxation (MST) from an accredited college/university
• Licensed CPA or attorney
• Experience working for or dealing with the government in the tax controversy space or controversy experience in another public accounting firm, law firm and/or corporate controversy experience
• Strong understanding of the operations of the IRS, its procedures and its processes
• Excellent research and writing skills with the ability to articulate complex tax issues and position
• Extremely strong communication and public speaking skills;
• Ability to interact and communicate with clients.
• Ability to develop solid working relationships with others.
